Mother, Does It Happen Again?

It was the first day of school, and I waited excitedly by the community gate, keeping my eye out for any sign of the arrival of the school bus. My mother stood silently, holding my hand so tightly that I felt as if I were chained to a lamppost near my house.

“Mother, what time is it? When will the school bus come? Will the bus driver uncle forget to pick me up? Mother, did you tell the school …,” my mother interrupted my rambling and looked me in the eye, gently saying, “Son, you need to be patient. Just wait for the bus. I contacted the school a long time ago and made sure that they would pick you up once school starts. Don’t you want to spend more time with me now?”

“Yes, I want to be with you. But, I just don’t want to miss my first day of school. Hsing-hsing, she always tells me that there is a lot of fun stuff in the school. I like to …” “Honk! Honk!” Upon hearing the honk of the school bus, I was so eager and ready that I shook off the grip of my mother’s hand and rushed to the bus. When I got back home that afternoon, I could barely stop talking about my day. My mother kept nodding her head with a big smile as I excitedly regaled.

The next morning, my mother woke me, and said, “It’s time for school.”

I stared at her in a cheerful mood, “Mother, does it happen again?”

Pausing for a moment with tears welling up in the edges of her eyes, my mother replied, “Yes, you’ll have another happy day in school.”

Mother, Does It Happen Again? is one of written exercises for my memoir writing class, the second half of which is based on my previously posted short story entitled The First Experience of Schooling.

Yes. And the narrator forgot to say goodbye to his mother.

Yes, it's a sign of growing up, of beginning the first step to discover one's way of learning.

It makes you cry to see your child grow up. But I guess it would make you cry more if they didn't.

I like the ending which expresses a little bit of sadness mixed with motherly joy.

Yes, "letting go" of their children is the hardest lesson for any concerned parents to learn and live with.

This is an eye-catching image which reveals the main theme of your piece.

A good discerning eye for my piece.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

I’ve revised my piece for first-day jitters.

As well expressed in the Toronto Star’s featured article on a day of firsts,

There is always a certain anticipation about the first day of school. A feeling that steals away your sleep the night before, yet allows you to wake up with a smile. It's spurred, often, by the realization that what lies ahead is the start of many new beginnings, new friendships and lessons to be learned. We talk to four people on the cusp of momentous firsts: the first day of high school, first day of university, first day of teaching, and the first step of letting your child go — to kindergarten.”
