The apple sits on the tray, facing you,
stillness floating from its gloss.
Over her plump arch, pigment sprays and shines.
Painter, can you smooth her remote ache
which thrills beneath the peel till the depth of her pulp?
If tracing, it could trace back to the distant mustard family -
two weapons overlapped, they control life.

Painter, I don’t want to interrupt you.
I do want to ask you
to open the window a little bit in the afternoon -
let the bee that returns from honey picking
stand on her pedicel,
like a geologist bending over The Great Rift Valley,
looking down the depth of her wound.
