Poem text of This was a Poet — It is That by Emily Dickinson

This was a Poet — It is That
Distills amazing sense
From ordinary Meanings —
And Attar so immense

From the familiar species
That perished by the Door —
We wonder it was not Ourselves
Arrested it — before —

Of Pictures, the Discloser —
The Poet — it is He —
Entitles Us — by Contrast —
To ceaseless Poverty —

Of portion — so unconscious —
The Robbing — could not harm —
Himself — to Him — a Fortune —
Exterior — to Time —

Note:

My Chinese translation of Dickinson's poem is my thank to Anna, 星子, Christine, and ericcoliu for their heated, civilized, heart-to-heart, rhetorically contentious discussions (posted at http://coviews.com/viewtopic.php?t=39000 ) about being a good writer and an attentive reader (in ericcoliu's didactic view, all of us should be both of a good writer and an attentive reader). Let's now begin Negotiating with the Dead (ericcoliu claimed that this is a good book on writing and everyone should read this book before he/she posts anything on this forum) and be an attentive and demanding reader (this is the instruction from Teacher ericcoliu).

You throw the every word of you own instruction into my mouth.

You really assume the role of the Teacher of English Garden.

I deeply hope:

There will be a Poet — It is That
Distills amazing sense

自己無止盡的匱乏 would be better.

You're a naughty student. Teacher ericcoliu is angry at you.

I think Emerson's poetic essay on "The Poet" could be a perfect conclusion of the heated debate among our fellow writers.

Read as Dickinson's declaration of her attitudes toward writing, a poet is defined as a person who "Distills amazing sense / From ordinary Meanings —". The poet ont only suggests another possible meaning of the word, but she/he also extracts "so immense" a thing "From the familiar species / That perished by the Door —".

Yes, I agree with Christine's suggestion.

Her poetics releases words from their existing connections with particular meanings and let them float among the lines, suggesting ceaseless possibilities of making surprising senses.

Does this phrase a defiant gesture to John Newton's "Amazing Grace" given by Christine God?

The revised version is a good translation.

温暖的水獸 写到:

This was a Poet — It is That
Distills amazing sense
From ordinary Meanings —
And Attar so immense

The is one of the best definitions of "poet" I've ever read. This was a Poet defines the poet by negatives, such as words with prefixes "de," "a," and "un." Dickinson, the poet, unsettles us and also imprints the ordinary into the thoughtful and beautiful (Distills amazing sense / From ordinary Meanings — / And Attar so immense”).
