The Death of a Soldier
Each piper's note. Each salute. Each pallbearer's step. Each hearse. Each chaplain. All painful reminders to the death of a fallen solider. Death is unlike any other event in the world; It stands for the unique, for the irrevocable, for the irreversible, for something that can't be repeated. Death gives meaning to all those images and phrases; all other applications for such images and phrases are but metaphors at best, dead words at worst. Death give its brute, non-metaphoric meaning to the point of no return. Each death is an irreparable loss, a loss forever, and eventually a loss of a world. _________________ My throat knew thirst before the structure

The beginning caught my attention and I wanted to read more. However the following passage, I feel, goes a kind of generalized. I want to see how the death of a solider is different than other deaths and to be more specific what event or battlefield ( can be referenced) caused the death of a solider. This maybe just me.
Am I getting too critical? Please let me know.

I agree with the comments Lake and Champagne made.
Champagne 写到: |
A soldier? Kill for a cause or die for a cause? |
Why we fight against one another? For whose interests?
Renowned British poet and soldier Wilfred Edward Salter Owen, regarded by many as the leading poet of the First World War, expressed his outrage in his famous poem, The Parable of the Old Man and the Young, against all those in power who took counties to war.
So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went,
And took the fire with him, and a knife.
And as they sojourned both of them together,
Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father,
Behold the preparations, fire and iron,
But where the lamb for this burnt-offering?
Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps,
and builded parapets and trenches there,
And stretchèd forth the knife to slay his son.
When lo! an angel called him out of heaven,
Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad,
Neither do anything to him, thy son.
Behold! Caught in a thicket by its horns,
A Ram. Offer the Ram of Pride instead.
But the old man would not so, but slew his son,
And half the seed of Europe, one by one.
In his poem, Owen squarely condemns not condones the sacrifice of British youth by comparing the ascent of Abraham to Mount Moriah and his near-sacrifice of Isaac there with the start of The Great War. The rulers of Europe (the old man) believed that sacrificing their nations' (Ram of) Pride was too high a price to pay. By choosing war, the greatest of all evils, over humility, they kill the young men of Europe (Isaac), effectively with their own hands.
Today, living and bombarded with the propagandized slogans of the war on terror, we need more poets like Owen. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Not at all. Thanks for your valuable suggestion.
This piece is my response, which was influenced by Canada's fallen soldiers, to the suggestion that the stretch of Highway 401 running from Trenton, Ont., to Toronto will be officially renamed the Highway of Heroes in remembrance of Canada's fallen soldiers. _________________ My throat knew thirst before the structure

Good point. Thanks for sharing your view on war and death and for your insightful review of Wilfred Owen's anti-war poem. _________________ My throat knew thirst before the structure

Interesting discussions. I agree with Lake's point. And Eric is quite right, we need more poets like Owen.
By the way, the title might be shortened to "The Death of a Soldier" because the word "fallen" usually means "death". |

Thanks for the comment. You're right about the title. I've changed it.
I also wrote a companion piece, The death of an Enemy Combatant, to the story above. _________________ My throat knew thirst before the structure
