Thematic Review:

In A long, long sleep, a famous sleep, Emily Dickinson uses a special kind of sleep as a metaphor for death. This kind of sleep is "famous" because it is an uninterrupted sleep that “makes no show for dawn,” and because it is “an independent one” having no regard for other occurrences. Furthermore, this sleep is “a long sleep” that lasts "the centuries”, and there is no “idleness like this”. Unlike Shakespeare’s Hamlet who likens death to a long sleep and who wonders “for in that sleep of death what dreams may come,” Dickinson shows no fear of death -- the unknown -- by referring to it as “idleness.” More importantly, man will lie dead in “a hut of stone / To bask the centuries away / Nor once look up for noon.” Her view of death is in line with that of Job in the Old Testament (“man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no longer, He will not awake nor be aroused out of his sleep." Job 14:12), a nihilistic view of death which compares death to "A long, long sleep, a famous sleep". For her, the sleep of death is permanent, not "one short sleep past " as John Donne claims in his famous religious poem, Death be not Proud .
