Reading and Writing: Life on the Page
(A Confucian Confusion was accepted and published in the Fall 2008 Issue (online and print) of The Stellar Showcase Journal, a literary journal affiliated with the Canada Cuba Literary Alliance and The Canadian Federation of Poets)
A Confucian Confusion: A Poem Dedicated to the Late Taiwanese Filmmaker Edward Yang
It is early morning
It is high noon
It is late night
I do things
Just as my ancestors did
I sit alone
By the lake of mind
I see your face
Beneath the water
We never get tired
Of gazing at each other
I call out to you
Silently comes an echo
I dedicate these moments
To you alone, for you
I groom myself
Notes
1 Edward Yang (楊德昌) was one of the most gifted filmmakers of the Taiwanese New Wave Cinema. His films express the confusion, anxiety, and sheer beauty of societal transformation. His 1994 film, A Confucian Confusion (獨立時代), struggles mainly with the division between the modern and the traditional.
2 Cinematheque Ontario is presenting a complete retrospective to Edward Yang (1947-2007), Edward Yang’s Taipei Stories, which includes the great Taiwanese director’s masterpieces.

According to Confucius' teaching, to cultivate one’s character is to “Examine oneself three times daily.” In plain words, it is to look inside ourselves when we encounter problems in life.
Then, how does A Confucian Confusion occur? _________________ Don't imitate me;

Is it because just like the lead characters in Yang's film, a confucian confusion occur due to the struggle between the traditional and the modern? |

Yes.

True, but only to some extent.
The Chinese title of A Confucian Confusion is 獨立時代. Do we cultivate the capability of reflective thinking? _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Yes, this is a habitual way of thinking that keeps one from making one's ethical decisions and actions in spite of the fact that one examines oneself three times daily. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

|
Culture, the shared systems of meanings, constructs the social circumstances of a society’s citizens. These shared systems of meaning are the intentional and expected ways of feeling and thinking, and speaking about things in the life-world. They are the silent frames of reference that make things sensible for each person, and for us. Now living in the modern, democratic era which means individual independence and autonomy, it’s time for us to re-think and thus re-articulate agrarian Confucius’ teaching into the modern context of deliberate democracy. _________________ Don't imitate me;

Yes.
Edward Yang tries to bring to attention the irony between the Chinese title and the English one, emphasizing struggles mainly with the division between the modern and the traditional. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |
