Reading, Writing, and Life on the Page
An Immigrant
Nostalgia has given me misty eyes
With which I seek the Promised Land.
Note:
This poem is my literary tribute to the “Ambiguist Generation (朦朧世代),” who have been searching for light with dark eyes.

朦胧, a Chinese term, has been translated as "misty". However, as Eugene Eoyang points out, this translation "promotes serious misunderstanding of their poetry [朦胧诗], which -- far from being romantic and wide-eyed as "misty" implies -- is dense, subtle, and ironic". I support his view and adopt his translation.

A juxtaposition of two contrasting moods indicates paradoxically heartfelt feelings of an immigrant.

A good metaphor. Read Ruth Whitman's Castoff Skin in which she focuses on the central metaphor of the snake shedding its skin.

It's a literary term coined by Eugene Eoyang, who is an associate professor of comparative literature and of East Asian languages and literatures at Indiana State University. It's used to describe the poetic style of a group of Chinese poets who experimented with new forms and content in poetry which evoked considerable controversy in China in the early 80s.

In fact, I read a few poets' poem and found some words not recognized by dictionary. I guess because they made their own words.
