Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird

It asked a crumb of me.


Personal Reflection:

I like this simple, metaphorical description of hope as a bird "perch[ing] in the soul" because the bird "sing[s] the tune and never stop[s] at all" even when faced with the extreme conditions -- "the storm," "the chillest land," and "the strangest sea" -- and it, "never, in extremity, ask[s] a crumb of me."

Personally speaking, I like Dickinson's use of "abash" to describe the storm's damaging effects on the bird of hope, and it wrenches the reader back to the reality behind the pretty metaphor. For me, this bird metophor is not merely a metaphor, but it's a realistic description of the human potentiality.
