Reading, Writing, and Life on the Page

A River Runs Through It

As the heat mirages on the river
in front of me danced with and
through each other, I could feel
patterns of my own life joining with
them. It was here, ...
... I started this story ... 1

Life is flowing on like a river, sometimes with murmurs, sometimes bending this way or that. It is swift, oftentimes voiceless yet continuous. You couldn't re-live any moment of time past just as you can never step twice into the same river, for other waters are ever flowing on.

Every year at the time when the new year is in and the old out, I'm trying to make sense of what I was, and of how I am now. I've always believed my first duty to myself is to live my life to its fullest, but I've also been haunted by another conviction that everything is, by and large, either preordained or accidental. As I reflect on the past year, I seem to have charged through my life in a kind of panic, and looking back, I feel that I have achieved little of worth beyond my physical existence.

Today, I woke up earlier, and continued to read Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. I was fascinated by her conception of “the moment” and innovative use of stream of consciousness, key elements shaping her narrative point of view. In To the Lighthouse, she shows convincingly that the time perceived by her characters in the present moment is complex and multi-layered. I was struck by one single complex sentence consisting of 260 words that brilliantly captures the complexity of one moment through a skillfully layered structure of parenthetical phrases and clauses, modifying phrases, and a rich array of various subordinate clauses. 3

The mind of the central character, Mrs. Ramsay, constantly moves back and forth through memory and conjecture to connect the present moment to past experiences and future anxieties. One sound stops, so Mrs. Ramsay becomes aware of another, and ends with a momentary feeling of terror. Mrs. Ramsay has so gloomy a sense of life that she must constantly rely on the existence of family rituals all around her to assert her energies against the forces of death and decay.

I share this grim sense of life with Mrs. Ramsay. I have a strong feeling that life as I know it ends. Life changes fast. Life changes in an instant. It is not a question of self-pity but a question of a, or I should say the, way of being, in an inevitable human existential condition. I try to say NO while time is passing; however, time is staying while I'm gradually passing by and away. Life changes while time is passing. I seem to have no control of the passage over time and over my life.

There is always a burning desire emerging from my heart and pushing me to stop and step into the river of my life. I want to re-live “moments of being”, as Virginia Woolf stressed in Moments of Being 2, of the year past: moments of being hurt badly and helped unexpectedly, of eyes wide open with surprise and brimming uncontrollably with tears, and of feeling hopeful and indifferent in silence. I am worried that most of my time is lived in what she called the "kind of nondescript cotton wool" of life "not lived consciously."

In and through my remembrance of things past, all of them are, eventually, merging into one remembered moment. A river of my life runs through it, a river that is always cutting and curving, now hurrying, now eddying, sometimes draining into dry channels, but still carrying its load of soil and rocks. Yet, there is a voice murmuring from beneath the river, "Don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." 4

1 A River Runs Through It written by Norman Maclean.

2 Moments of Being is a collection of autobiographical fragments that Virginia Woolf wrote at various times in her life. These fragments fall rather neatly at the beginning, middle, and end of her career as a writer; thus, they provide an interesting perspective into her development as a writer.

3 “The gruff murmur, irregularly broken by the taking out of pipes and the putting in of pipes which had kept on assuring her, though she could not hear what was said (as she sat in the window which opened on the terrace), that the men were happily talking; this sound, which had lasted now half an hour and had taken its place soothingly in the scale of sounds pressing on top of her, such as the tap of balls upon bats, the sharp, sudden bark now and then, "How's that? Moments of Being, the title of her autobiography, comes from one of autobiographical fragments, the piece entitled "A Sketch of the Past," where she talks about moments of being as the only moments that one really lives -- most days, she says, are made up of non-being, "a kind of non-descript cotton wool (...) a great part of every day is not lived consciously" (70). But what are these moments of being? They seem to be a kind of shock of transcendence, where the self is lost entirely and subsumed into something larger, where a pattern is revealed behind the cotton wool: "I am hardly aware of myself, but only of the sensation. I am only the container of the feeling of ecstasy, of the feeling of rapture" (67). Woolf's text is also interesting because of her ideas of what a self, and a life, really consists of.

Your piece, which reflects mainly on "a question of the way of being in an inevitable human existential condition" through the self-examination of one's lived experience, ends with a rather more "hopeful" feeling.


I read Maclean's novella several years ago and had seen the film adaptation by Robert Redford. I Love both of them, of which the ending is superb with Norman's reciting of his poem:

Eventually all things merge into

one, and a river runs through it.

The river was cut by the world's

great flood and runs over rocks

from the basement of time....

Under the rocks are the words, and

some of the words are theirs.

I am haunted by waters.

I love both of them, too, surely including Maclean's poem; in some way, my piece is a tribute to his beautifully written novella. About ten years ago, I once wrote a movie review of A River Runs Through It. Share with you and welcome your comment on it:

大河戀 -- —— 淡入心靈和記憶中的父子情

每個人一生中都有那麼一次,向著所愛的人問同一句話:「主啊 !我們願意幫忙。」但是,幫什麼忙呢?的確,我們無法幫助親 人。我們不知要獻出自己的那一部分;然而,往往我們奉獻出的 部分,並不是對方所需的。因此,與我們生活在一起的親人中, 我們該知道誰會逃避我們;但是,我們仍會愛他們,完完全全地 愛他們,卻不需要完全地了解他們。


── 麥克林牧師臨終前主日講道辭 ──

   十二年在人的一生歲月中,也許不算太長;但是,對於一個勇於探索人生,尋求生命終極意義的人而言,足夠作為蘊釀人生信念與突破的時期;勞勃.瑞福 (Robert Redford)便是一位這樣自我挑戰的導演。他在1980年初次所執導《凡夫俗子》影片中,探討一個都市中產家庭裡所隱藏的母子親情溝通危機(註一),一新世人耳目之後;又在1992 年所拍攝的《大河戀》影片中,深刻描繪一個鄉村牧師家庭的父子親情教育與限制(註二),展現了邁向電影大師的成熟風格。這幾部作品具體表達了勞勃瑞福對親情的關切,並進一步探求人生的終極關懷;在眾多娛樂掛帥的好萊塢主流電影中,彷彿一股清流,洗滌觀眾的心靈。

   勞勃瑞福在拍攝《大河戀》時做了一個重要決定,便是保留原著中第一人稱的觀點,由作者諾曼麥克林(Norman Maclean)親自娓娓道來他家族的故事;使觀眾覺得不只是看到一些人事變故,並了解到這是作者成長經歷與其中學習到的生命原則。若是忽略這些原則,這不過是部描述沐浴在瑰麗山河景色中,人們成長與釣魚的故事,正如此片在台灣上演的宣傳廣告詞 ── 一部令人清新耳目的河川環保影片。

   這部影片若有什麼缺失的話,便是它是部容易失去微妙意義關連的細緻作品;因為片中前後三分之一的影像風格,展現了美國西部蒙大拿州大自然風景的奧秘與魅力,讓觀眾充份感受到一種屬於精神上的喜悅和心靈上的平靜,反而忽略劇中人物的心理變化。

   其實,這部詩意的影片是談論一位父親教導兒子們有關他的人生信念和生活原則,以及親情間的溝通與限制。在影片中,麥克林牧師除了在主日崇拜育兒子們聖經的道理之外,且以半科學與半宗教的方法傳授他們蠅釣的技術(註三),來體驗上帝所造大自然的生命規律。蠅釣除了是一項在十點鐘到二點鐘方向範圍內,以四拍子節奏表現的技藝之外,更是麥克林父子情感交流,傳遞經驗價值的家庭活動。

  就清教徒倫理而言,這活動在上帝國度裡是個完的隱喻——等於藝術、直覺、以及技藝知識,它可說是最佳的個人與群體活動。釣手總是盡力超越一般垂釣原則,找到符合他們自己的拋繩節奏,力求達到完美的力與美組合。對於麥克林牧師而言,惟有掌握上帝的節拍,我們才能重獲力與美;一切的善——永恆的救贖也好,釣大鱒魚也好——都是由神恩而來,神恩又由藝術而來,而藝術得之不易(註四)。

   在父親同樣信念地諄諄教導之下,哥哥諾曼和弟弟保羅自小在處理面對所有的事情上,卻是以做得對與做得美的界線間有所區隔地逐漸長大成人。諾曼從小就聽話受教,在父親嚴格的指導之下,寫出一手精簡清晰的好文章與得自父親真傳的蠅釣技術;長大之後,成為芝加哥大學文學教授,為父親增添不少光采。保羅自小卻是叛逆成性,心中有股自我成就的強大驅力;從早上拒吃數千年來上帝賜給人作食物的燕麥,到長大後放棄父傳的十點鐘到二點鐘拋繩方式,自創影子釣法(註五),成為一流的蠅釣大師。

  在麥克林父子最後一次一同釣魚的時候,保羅曾一展影釣的完美身手,博得父親贈予天才的名號。不過,自我成就的驅力在失去人生方向的時候,便容易成為自我毀滅的動力;在好賭與酗酒的纏索之下,保羅在極為年輕的歲月便走完他的一生,留給一家人無限的悲痛與遺憾。

   保羅死後,麥克林牧師有次詢問諾曼有關保羅的事;從彼此的談話中,才知雙方都假定對方知道保羅的事,可是除了知道他是位天才釣手外,對其他卻是一無所知,都深深遺憾未能幫助保羅脫離困境。牧師對諾曼說道:「你太年輕,無法幫上任何人的忙,而我卻太老了。所謂幫助,並不是某種慇懃的好意,像是供應野櫻桃果醬或是給錢;而是將你自己的一部分給予某人,讓他能夠欣然地接受,且迫切地需要。」也許,是基於對人性需要與限制的了解,麥克林牧師臨終前的主日講道辭,道出了他心中潛藏已久的感受;並且以下述詩作的心情而終(註六):

記憶不是完全地渾沌,也不是赤裸裸的;
為追求榮耀的雲煙,才來到世上。
我們自上帝的家園離開,雖然繁花春草不再,我們不再悲哀;
在殘花衰草中,努力栽種。
原始的同情心不可喪失,受難時的平心靜氣不可失,以愛的信心
看透死亡。
感謝我們所寫出的心靈!感謝心中的溫柔、歡愉和畏懼!
在我認為:最卑賤的花開放時,也能使長年以淚洗面者省思。


   導演勞勃.瑞福和攝影師菲立浦.盧瑟拉德(Philippe Rousselet) 以令人驚喜的視覺形式主義(Visual Formalism)方式,捕捉到麥克林一家人生命中重要時刻的轉變:大黑腳河畔的垂釣、牧師的主日講道、諾曼接到芝加哥大學的聘書、保羅的死訊、以及影片前後諾曼的回溯記憶,深刻地描繪隱藏其間的感情流動。其中最令我動容的一幕,便是諾曼在一家人難得團聚的晚餐上,宣布收到芝加哥大學寄來的聘書;頓時一陣沈默,一股驕傲欣喜之情充滿整個餐廳。

   牧師夫婦很快地交換了一個會心微笑的眼神,同聲說道:「親愛的!看啊!我們的兒子。」夫婦雙方的欣喜之心取代了原先詢問保羅新鮮事的好奇之心,一個反應鏡頭捕捉到保羅聽到消息,略為一怔,隨後轉為高興的面容;此刻,保羅知道:他絕不會離開蒙大拿。

   大黑腳河是條家族之河,訴說著麥克林家族悲歡的故事。麥克林牧師用心教導兒子們體驗上帝所造大自然的規律;小兒子保羅卻擺脫所有自然的規律,像是一件藝術作品,昂立在大河之上;大兒子諾曼謹承父訓,明確地知道:人生不是藝術,那一刻不會長久。諾曼麥克林在年老時,回首在大黑腳河畔成長的歲月,寫下他自己家族的故事——那些與他共同生活,他所愛,並且是應有所了解卻不了解之人的故事,一條河貫穿所有的記憶,所有的人、事、物、景都淡入了心靈深處。

   註:


1.《凡夫俗子》(Ordinary People)的劇情簡介如下:在痛失長子的悲劇之後,貝絲.加爾文與幼子康瑞得一家人貌合神離地生活在一起。康瑞得為兄長之死內疚不已,自殺未遂後,便定期接受心理治療。母親亦深陷喪子之痛中,常在康瑞得面前,有意無意地表現對長子的偏愛,卻無力給予幼子足夠的關愛與支持。可憐的父親加爾文夾在溝通不良的母子之間,試圖重新修補這破裂的家庭,拾回往日的天倫之樂。

2.《大河戀》(A River Runs Through It) 的劇情簡介如下:諾曼和保羅兩兄弟與他們的父母相依為命,在尚未開發的蒙大拿州大黑腳河畔成長。他們的父親是位個性堅毅、教養嚴謹的長老教會牧師;除了教育兩弟兄聖經的真理以外,尚且傳授他們蠅釣的技術,體驗上帝所造大自然的生命規律。這兩兄弟雖然親密相愛,但是個性殊異。哥哥諾曼一心以父親為榜樣,且醉心於文學研究,後來成為大學教授;弟弟保羅生性活潑,豪放不羈且熱愛釣魚與賭博,長大以新聞記者為業,後來因賭債糾紛而死於非命。四十年後,諾曼麥克林提筆寫下這段家族故事,才了解當時人事變故的原由,注入了往日歡樂與傷感的人生記憶。

3. 蠅釣是一種在釣鉤上繫羽毛和彩線,偽裝成蠅蟲,以誘魚上釣的釣魚法。

I love both of them, too.

Robert Redford manages the movie so well to catch the spirit of Maclean’s novella. In one affecting departure from the book, the movie shows Norman beginning and his father completing the final lines of Wordsworth's Immortality Ode:

Thanks to the human heart by

which we five,

Thanks to its tenderness, its joys,

and fears,

To me the meanest flower that

blows can give

Thoughts that do often lie too deep

for tears.

Oddly enough, for some unexplainable reason, at this moment of writing his poem reminds me of William Blake's Auguries of Innocence :

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

Yes, life changes fast; life changes in an instant.

In and through reading your piece, I tried to catch your sense of "an impulse of terror," but I didn't get it fully. Maybe it's due to age difference or life experience.

In my view, life gives us brief moments of happiness( or moments of being); in those precious moments we get memories that last a life time.
