Riding the Train of Life was published in the No. 59, 2008 issue and The Maple Tree and I in the No. 62 issue, of CANADIAN STORIES, a literary magazine featuring family stories, personal experiences and memories of the past.

Riding the Train of Life

Riding the Go Train home
Looking out the window
Watching miles of life roll by
I sit in a low-spirited flashback
Of one day gone by
And find nothing accomplished
The train of life is speeding past
It stands still for no man

The Maple Tree and I

Standing on the front lawn
Near the maple tree
Ripped of its leaves
Letting go the riches of the season
I do what the immigrants do
What the unemployed do
I cultivate hope
At the gun-mouth of time

Journeying is Hard*

Midway through the journey of my life
I find myself within a forest.
In the midst of blinding mist
I get glimpses now and then of paths
Which may be deceptive.
There are too many forks ahead --
Which am I going to take ?
Should I take the path most trodden on
Or the path less travelled by?
Two paths diverged in the woods ahead
I can only take one.
Journeying is hard for a free man.

* It’s my homage and literary response to the works of Robert Frost and Dante Alighieri.

I began my new journey and reminded myself

A journey of a thousand miles / begins with a single step

Well written, well said.

Life as a Journey

I believe “Life as a journey” is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. I’ve been taught since my early childhood that people are supposed to have their destinations in life and do their best to move so as to reach those destinations. This idea is a complex metaphorical map of mind that takes the following forms:

A Purposeful life is a journey.
A person living a life is a traveler.
Life goals are destinations.
A life place is an itinerary.

The most important step I was told to take for the journey of my life was to define my life goal first, then build some itinerary pillars as midway stops, and draw my own itinerary. Life is imagined as having a beginning, a middle, and an ending. It begins with birth into childhood; the adult vocation forms the middle, the main route of the life journey; Retirement initiates the last path that culminates in death.

When I grew up, life as a journey seemed to me that it was not a preconceived or well-planned straight route but a crooked road with unexplored or less traveled sideways. This is to say life as a journey is less a journey toward its destination than a journey into self-discovery. In a sense, every challenge or change I face in everyday life is a journey: every
lost found or lost, every birth or death, every job got or lost, every move to a new place, and even a new country. Every situation confronting me with something unexpected will force me to re-evaluate my way of thinking and of living and my life goal.

At this moment of my life, on the way of my life journey, the only thing my heart desires for is that I will become better equipped to face difficulties and more capable to go through this journey full of challenges and unexpected things.

Freedom entails decision-making and taking responsibilities.

That’s why French writer and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, who defined the philosophic term existentialism to refer to his own work during and immediately after the WWII, pursued the idea that “we make ourselves.”

Live Your Life Spherically

Live spherically in many directions
Never lose your childish enthusiasm
And things will come your way
Regrets are a waste of time
They are crippling you in the present

A Sunlit Hilltop

Midway through your life's journey
You found yourself in a dark wood
For the straight trail was lost to you
Upon reaching the bottom of the hill
Worried and frightened
You looked up
Seeing a sunlit hilltop

The Call to the Heights

Now I'm steeled;
I follow the call
Commanding me to strive for the heights:
Not looking back but moving forward.
I tread beneath my feet
A life, not half - and far less whole,
A life between regret and sin.
Upon here on the heights will be
A new life of freedom.
