We Talked

We talked about death
and dying
Those who will have bodies
feared fire
or claustrophobic confinement
Those who will have corpses
just shrugged
and hoped others
and science
and newly fertilized flowers
would thrive

There are keys that poetry turns
that nothing else moves
There are rooms
that poets enter more easily
more deeply

then follow narrow corridors
that lead from there
to twisted memories
and wide clear open spaces

Elka Ruth Enola

As TOPS's oakville branch, we gather at Elka's house each month to talk about poetry.

Last meeting, after we read poems, we chatted a lot.

The other day, Elka sent us the poem based on the content we talked.

I asked Elka's permission to post the poem here to share with chinese poets too.

It's good to have a group of close friend to talk about death and dying, and in my view, it's a first step to acknowledge that we're thrown into this world and being-toward-death in a Heideggerian sense.

My father doesn’t talk about death
Because he cares more about his name
And wants to leave a good reputation behind him.

My mother doesn’t talk about death
Because she is afraid of death
And doesn’t want to be cut off from her loved ones.

My older brother doesn’t talk about death
Because he thinks he is courageous enough
To face all kinds of worst situations, including death.

My younger brother doesn’t talk about death
Because he is so busy enjoying life, here and now.

I often think of death
Because I want to know what life means
I could die in peace at night
If I know what life means in the morning.

Martin Heidegger, the 20th-century German philosopher, introduced to the world a large body of work that represented a profound change of direction for philosophy. Such was the depth of change that he found himself needing to introduce a number of neologisms and adapted vocabulary, often connected to idiomatic words and phrases in the German language.

Two of his most basic neologisms, present-at-hand and ready-to-hand, are used to describe various attitudes toward to things in the world. For Heidegger, such "attitudes" are prior to, i.e. more basic than, the various sciences of the individual items in the world. Science itself is an attitude, one that attempts a kind neutral investigation. Other related terms are also explained below.

Here Elka brings a few thoughts about death and how poets go beyond death. good.
