Taipei, A State of Mind

Take a popular American rhythm
Add an ancient Koto drum
Showcase a re-invented Aboriginal dance
Stir it with newly-found Taiwanese pride
Then you fashion a city, Taipei
Which is more a state of mind

Thanks for your comment.

To me, Taipei is a post-modern city in the making, comprising of a collage of conflicting memories and ideologies.

Looking at a post-modern city like Taipei, we may find that Taipei has become a city as a locus of hybridity riddled with a diversity of cultural representations, to which its residents' identities can hardly be related. Borrowing what Iain Chambers describes about the metropolis city in his article entitled Cities without Maps, we may suggest that Taipei is "a reality that is multiformed, heterogeneous, and diasporic," a city failing to provide its residents a readable and comprehensible image and thus delineated as a place of "a absence of character."

The same feeling when I visit back China, a lot of cities are over-developed.

But now people realize the beauty and unique of our old trandition and culture (building, arts etc), so they are rebuilt some of them.

Yes, there is no doubt in my mind that the big cities in China have undergone through the similar, surely in the large scale, urban developmental stages as Taipei has before. Not surprisingly, the ruptures of the social fabrics accompany China's rapid pace of development and its integration into the global market, severing the connection between cultural memory and history. In an interview with a reporter from chinaculture.org, Wang Anyi, Chinese writer who has in particular depicted Shanghai life, stressed, “At this moment, the literature spirit is critical. A city with or without literature could be dramatically different. Literature could improve the artistic style of a city.”

She backed up her statement with her most challenging novel, Changhen Ge (Song of Everlasting Sorrow, 1996), which is a beautifully written epic tracing the aspirations and muted sufferings of a beauty pageant winner from 1940s Shanghai through the political storms of China to the present.

Changhen Ge does not only depict a city, but rather demonstrate a whole new view of a city that could hardly be achieved in the sense of historical research or personal experience.

We need more writers like Wang Anyi and Tzu Tianxing to help us in the search of lost time and place, which once was meaningful to each and every one of us.

like your poem, please write more of it.
a state of mind (taipei) is better than a mind of state(china), or not?

Thank you for your encouragement.

It’s hard to say which one is better, a state of mind (Taipei) or a mind of State (China)?

In the eyes of its foreign investors and rival competitors, China is a state of minds; if China continues to open itself up to the world, its human capital will be a mind of state.
