LOCUST SPRING
BY J.M.YATES 寄北译
One by one
The heavy doors
Of my senses 重门
Swing open into the spring.
Things I spent
The winter naming
Their round syllables,
Fly into the fruit trees,
Sing down the full throats
Of the fattening birds.
In the dark
When the air relaxes
The rages of singing and wings,
Small circles descend
Toward the grass:
Each encapsulates seventeen years.
The poem “Locust Spring” by J. Michael Yates is an inspirational and philosophical one. It contains three stanzas, each with a unique image. The first stanza is a metaphor comparing human senses to heavy doors. After 17 years of waiting and dormancy underground, they finally get to waltz into the Spring, “one by one.” This metaphor vividly shows how spring rekindles our senses and leads us to all kinds of sensational experiences. The second stanza talks about the struggle of the new innocent lives (the “round syllables,” the young locusts or cicadas): Spring is joyful, but the unexpected death is also right around the corner. The poor little locusts are still singing while they are “down the full throats of the fattening birds,” right before their death. The third stanza depicts how life continues: the survivors of the brutal day can now let the “air” (symbol of death?) relax their rages “in the dark” and burgeon new lives which will “descend toward the grass/each encapsulate seventeen years” again. Spring is indeed not only about new life, but also about struggling and surviving. _________________ 寄北 |

Good poem, translation and commentary.
This reminds me of Basho's cicada:
Nothing in the cry
of cicadas suggests they
are about to die
Thank you for sharing. |
