“Faith” is a fine invention
When Gentlemen can see—
But Microscopes are prudent
In an Emergency.


This short poem is very creative and profound.
The simile of “faith”, an invention, really is human’s pride.
Yet to test faith or not, the trial of Emergency tells.
The words of microscopes and emergency here ironically enhance the fine invention.



For Death—or rather

Life’s Opportunity—

The Things that Death will buy
Are Room—
Escape from Circumstances—
And a Name—

With Gifts of life
How Death’s gifts may compare—
We know not—
For the Rates—lie Here—

This poem is also well known today.
It is really thrilling and striking with the comparison of Death and life.
The using of dash is very powerful. What death could bring? The dashes in this poem imply termination and silence. They bring the feeling of thoughts suddenly dropping or long breathe holding. The second verse is much unique and visual. Death will buy room and a name which put away life’s opportunity among the muted cemetery.
