Root Carving

This tree falls
in echoes of the saw,
roots pulled up roughly.
Dedicated hands
chisel them until
its dragon facade appears.
Those dying, once resilient limbs
survived many flashes of lightning,
recline under our sympathetic eyes.
Turn around,
we cuddle ourselves—
in layers of cold soil,
transplant our roots to another,
the hardship beyond anyone's touch.
