No Surprise

Life is not easy.
We grab it, like grasping
a coin in our hand,
hesitating to open.
We fear the truth
no matter which face,
it turns up.
Who can blame us?
Coins are of many kinds,
copper, silver,
if we are lucky, gold,
though all have
cold faces.
So we keep flipping it
avoid facing either side.
Hardly getting to know our truth,
light or dark, shallow or deep
we claim we are too busy
in this life.
Eventually our time is up.
From our pale funeral
shattered fragments float out;
the life we once lived
is muter than our body,
lying dead.
