The Ethere

I have been trying to expand my poetic and expressive horizons by experimenting with new forms of poetry. The first poetry form that I have been brave enough to attempt is the ethere. Etheres can be rhyme or they can be free-verse, whatever you are more comfortable with. There are 4 types of Etheres; Standard Ethere, Double Ethere, Reversed Ethere and Reversed Double Ethere. I will address each below.

The Standard Ethere has ten lines. The first line has one syllable, the second line has two syllables, the third line has three syllables and so on until it ends on line ten with ten syllables. An example follows:

Breathless

Time
stands still
when you speak.
I hold my breath
and I close my eyes.
I'd like to savor this
soft, fleeting moment with you,
but you'll be gone all too soon,
like a whisper echoing away.
time stands still and I hold my breath for days.


The Double Ethere has twenty lines. It follows the same pattern as a Standard Ethere, except that after building up to ten syllables at line ten it works back down to one syllable. Line eleven has ten syllables, line twelve has nine and so on until you reach line twenty with only one syllable. An example follows (I added a bonus 21st line to this piece for impact.):

Deliverance

My
torment;
all my pain
and broken thoughts
inside fractured brain.
I'll never be the same.
parasitic fantasy,
obliterated memories,
I find I'm my biggest enemy.
How in the world did I come to this end?
God deliver me from myself and my sins,
quiet the demons of destruction,
save me from this self-corruption-
my blissful insanity.
Where is my vanity?
I am failing and
I fear I lack
all the strength
to bring
me

back.


A Reversed Ethere is the opposite of the Standard Ethere. Line one has ten syllables, line two has nine syllables and so on until line ten ends with one syllable. An example follows:

Metamorphosis

Everything about you is changing the
way I view myself and see the world.
My once cold cynicism is
giving way to something else.
My life's been a journey-
hurt beyond my years,
but you show me
something new.
I have
changed.


A Double Reversed Ethere has twenty lines much like a Double Ethere, only it is the opposite. Line one has ten syllables and after working all the way to line ten, which contains one syllable. Line eleven starts with one syllable and by line twenty, you have worked back up to ten syllables. An example follows:

Divide

The line separating insanity
and genius is thin. I'm so crazy I'm
brilliant. I've crossed the line many
times. I wonder if that means
I am even more wise
or more insane. A
thin line lies in
front of me,
again
I
cross it
over and
over and still
again. I will not
stop until I am the
most crazy or most brilliant.
How long will it take to reach my
goal? Perhaps I shall not ever know:
A thin line separates me from myself.


Learning the styles of the Ethere has taught me to believe in my ability as a poet and not to fear trying styles that are foreign to me. I hope that you will also attempt a few Etheres and test your abilities. It is through trying new styles that we grow as writers and poets.
