Call for submissions: As We Speak: a multi-cultural anthology of contemporary Canadian poetry
Modern Canadian poetry in English has been enhanced by the presence of people from all over the world. My own heritage includes Anglo-Irish-German-Scot ancestry arriving in southwestern Ontario in the early nineteenth century, some directly from the old country, some by way of the United States. Two of the most important English-speaking poets of my generation came from my region of the province. Both Archibald Lampman, a poet celebrated as one of the primary poets of the age of Confederation, and Raymond Knister, regarded by many as the first major modern poet in English were born and raised only a few kilometers from my home farm. As a young person coming of age in the late nineteen sixties, I read the poetry of poets like Irving Layton, Al Purdy, Margaret Avison, and the generation of new and younger poets such as Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje to name a few. Since then there has been a great flowering in Canada in English of poetry from all over the world. In addition to this, the serious attention to the poetry of indigenous people has flourished in the mainstream. When critic Northrop Frye wrote of the aspiration for unity without uniformity, he may well have been anticipating the rich variety of voices celebrating cultural diversity without the dissipation of the essential tenants of what it means to be Canadian.
With this in mind, I propose to gather together work from a variety of cultural background from within Canada, brought together in an anthology in celebration of ancestry and place of origin. In this anthology I do not wish to highlight or reinforce the sense of our nation being comprised of hyphenated Canadians. Though my paternal grandfather (a second generation born in Canada) was often referred to as ‘that big Irishman’, in that he was tall and strong and proud of his Irish heritage, I am long past the time when I regarded myself as Irish-Canadian. I consider myself Canadian through and through. It is my hope that this anthology will acknowledge and celebrate diversity all the while reminding the reader of what it means to be truly Canadian.

1. Make both email word document submissions of your work to <[email protected]> and snail mail submissions to John B. Lee, PO Box 984, Port Dover, ON, N0A 1N0 along with return envelope and postage

2. This is an open call limited to either Canadian citizens or poets living in Canada

3. Please submit no more than three poems (6 pages or less)

4. Poems are preferably previously unpublished, though previously published poems will be considered as long as the poet owns copyright

5. The anthology will most likely appear in 2017 (Black Moss Press) so the deadline for submissions is late March 2016
