CBC Radio (Metro Morning) will air my new poem for Quiet Zones contest

A few days ago when I was still in Las Vegas for vacation, I got an email from CBC Radio to ask me to write a poem about silence. Today they ask me to come in to record it and want to air it on Monday (July 15)…but I work today, so they will record it for me. Glad to have my another poem: Life Jars on air! It will air between 7:25 – 7:30 a.m on July 15.

CBC just aired my poem: Life Jars

Life Jars

When I was a child,
I was told that silence is like light
having colors and faces.

Walking through the country in the dark,
I used to fill a glass jar with fireflies.
It became my blue starry compass.
When I inhaled the silence,
I could hear quiet voices from living creatures,
each making the music of its own life.

No grown up,
every day's busy journey in the city,
I thought our life jars must be full of mundane trifles and noises;
Yet wandering into ravines in this urban landscape,
I can find the silence, silence and silence-
Where it opens a door like sunrays breaking through.

Riding along the lakeshore,
I see sunset’s quiet reflection on the lake,
the CN Tower topping its splendor.

Like many commuters, I inhale the silence.

I don抰 know when I stopped believing in heaven,
or if I do. Maybe I just stopped receiving heaven.

The sun rose. I climbed into the pines� brittle
crowns. You could say I was retrieving heaven.

Not a place or a time, but blindness to everything
but one light, pulsing, pleasing: heaven.

We married in September. Everyone was still
wearing their summer shirts, sleeves of heaven.

It was white, there was a bend, and the car
spun. It was then I prayed, pleading with heaven.

When he goes limp, lie him down on the gurney,
Mom. Oxygen mask, breathing heaven.

The hospital shines, our son flies in and out.
The snow falls hard, relieving heaven.

He loves the colors of planets. I teach him
their lifelessness: beautiful, deceiving heaven.

I don抰 know who is buried beneath me
but I hear her break as I am leaving heaven.

How can you cry for one ruined life, Maria,
when you could be grieving for heaven?
