The Norton Anthology of English Literature is published by the W. W. Norton & Company. Spread out in six volumes and divided into two sets, the anthology provides an overview of poetry, drama, prose, fiction, and essays, spanning fourteen centuries from the eighth century Old English heroic epic poem of anonymous authorship through to the early 21st century diasporic poem of a Chinese immigrant writer. Since it first appeared in 1962, The Norton Anthology of English Literature has remained the sine qua non of college textbooks, setting the agenda for the study of English literature in the US and beyond.

"One of the joys of literature in English is its spectacular abundance. Even within the geographical confines of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, where the majority of texts brought together in this collection originated, there are more than enough distinguished and exciting works to fill the pages of this anthology many times over.
