Today, we lost Authur C. Clarke, author of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Arthur C. Clarke, who died today in Sri Lanka after suffering from breathing problems, was a British science fiction author, one of the Big Three in the sci-fi literary galaxy. The dominant theme of his writing is the clear and unshaming expression of “an optimistic view of science empowering mankind's exploration of the solar system.” Especially in his early work, he foregrounded “the extrapolation of a technological innovation or scientific breakthrough into the underlying decadence of his own society.” He was most famous for his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey and for collaborating with director Stanley Kubrick on the mind-bendingly poetic film of the same name. William Kloman wrote in the New York Times, "Space Odyssey is poetry. It asks for grooving, not understanding," a quote that was featured prominently in ads for the film, 2001: A Apace Odyssey , of which the opening depicts the sun rising above a crescent Earth while the introduction to Richard Strauss' tone-poem, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, plays, a visual poem of our existence and destiny.
I wrote a poem, Space Odyssey, posted at http://coviews.com/viewtopic.php?t=36930 and dedicated to him. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |
