very good for the beginning writers.
I was impressived by her honest and fresh views. Before I fear if there is meaning in my writing, now I just want to try it first.
I hope anyone who wishes to write could read her book.

Indeed, it’s a good book for aspiring writers who would like to follow Natalie Goldberg's rules for writing:
1 Keep your hand moving: once you begin, don't stop. Don't mix up editing and creating.
2 Be specific.
3 Lose control. Say what you want to say; don't hold back.
4 Don't think. Stay with your first thought.
5. Don't worry about punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
6. You are free to write the worst junk ever written in the universe.
7. If something scary comes up, go for it. That is where the energy is. If you avoid it, you will end up with abstract bland writing.
She recommends doing focused, disciplined, keeping-the-hand moving exercises as a way of learning to cut through your resistances or blocks. She suggests ten minute timed writing exercises as a warm up activity, and the suggestion for these exercises is to use: I see.., I hear..., I feel..., I smell..., etc.

Goldberg's views on writing are highly informed by her study of Zen meditation. She offers radically new perspectives of the “actual act of writing:” writing as spiritual practice; she encourages her readers to focuses more on the process, not result or meaning of writing. In her enlightening encounter with Zen master Katagiri Roshi, she unravels how it happens and explains how you really can develop your own approach to writing practice.
One key passage fully expresses her Zen-influenced views on writing is from the chapter entitled Artistic Stability:
"The problem is we think we exist. We think our words are permanent and solid and stamp us forever. That's not true. We write in the moment. Sometimes when I read poems at a reading to strangers, I realize they think those poems are me. They are not me, even if I speak in the "I" person. They were my thoughts and my hand and the space and the emotions at that time of writing. Watch yourself. Every minute we change. It is a great opportunity. At any point, we can step out of our frozen selves and our ideas and begin fresh. That is how writing is. Instead of freezing us, it frees us. ... The power is always in the act of writing. Come back to that again and again and again. ... We constantly need new insights, visions. We don't exist in any solid form. There is no permanent truth you can corner...that will satisfy you forever. Don't identify too strongly with your work. Stay fluid behind those black-and-white words. They are not you. They were a great moment going through you. A moment you were awake enough to write down and capture."
Have you seen some Buddhist monk make a sand mandala?
Making a sand mandala is an perfect example of her views on writing as spiritual practice: once it has been built and its accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished, it is systematically destroyed. The making and destroying of a sand mandala symbolise the transitory nature of things.

In the chapter entitled Doubt Is Torture, Goldberg emphasizes that
“Don't listen to doubt. It leads no place but to pain and negativity. Instead, have a tenderness and determination toward your writing, a sense of humour and a deep patience that you are doing the right thing.”
I think you can get practical and insightful advices and mirrored experiences on this tangling issue through reading Ha Jin’s latest novel, A Free Life. In my view, one of inspiring passages concerning this issue is the heart-to-heart dialogue between American accomplished poet Dick Harrison and aspiring Chinese immigrant poet Nan:
“I’m just telling zer[the] truth.”
“I’m not that fragile. But I have to assert myself, even to pat myself on the back. A lot of poets just write dreck, but still they have every thing – fame, money, and women.”
“So you write for those?” asked Nan, half joshingly.
“Why not? Poets are not saints. We have to make our way in the world too.”
“But poetry seems useless to me.”
“You have to take it as a matter of life and death if you want to write well, “ Dick said in earnest, and unconsciously put down his spoon.
Yes, writing is a matter of life and death if you want to write well.
In an interview with Dave Weich of Powell's City of Books, Ha Jin once said that
“Because I failed to do something else, writing in English became my means of survival, of spending or wasting my life, of retrieving losses, mine and those of others. Because my life has been a constant struggle, I feel close in my heart to the great Russian masters, including Chekhov, Gogol, and Babel. As for poetry, some ancient Chinese influences are Tu Fu, Li Po, and Po Chu-I… .
If I am inspired, it is from within. Very often I feel that the stories have been inside me for a long time, and that I am no more than an instrument for their manifestation. As for the subject matter, I guess we are compelled to write about what has hurt us most….
I haven't returned to China since I've been here. China is distant. I don't know what contemporary Chinese life is like now. I follow the news, but I don't have the mature sensation--I can't hear the noise, I can't smell the place. I'm not attached to it anymore. What's meaningful to me is the immigrant experience, the American life."
The most important work of immigrant literature for him is Nabokov's Pnin, which, as he said, "deals with the question of language, and I think that's at the core of the immigrant experience: how to learn the language--or give up learning the language!--but without the absolute mastery of the language, which is impossible for an immigrant. Your life is always affected by the insufficiency."
What follows is my literary response to this unsettling issue and to Ha Jin’s reflection on his English writing career:

Try to answer it as fully as I can
Take the risk

Sorry to be late to read this.
I am glad to see you have a good summary on the book. Yes, I guess for my writing I am more like to discover myself and the world. Each moment is a new one, that makes writing more interesting.
She also said, writing makes a writer live twice. I agree writing makes me another world.

Great points. Yes, You have to take it as a matter of life and death if you want to write well.
Thank you very much to recall the book " A free Life" and give it a sharp insight here.
As for your poems, I also feel the call to write, writing my own stories.
