Faith Suspended: Review of "Faith" is a fine invention by Emily Dickinson

"Faith" is a fine invention

"Faith" is a fine invention
When Gentlemen can see—
But Microscopes are prudent
In an Emergency.

Thematic Review

In her succinct and yet thought-provoking poem, "Faith" is a fine invention, Emily Dickinson questions the faith in traditional Christianity by putting quotes around the word "Faith;" in doing so, she brings to attention the irony between the word's original meaning, which is the belief in God, and its modern meaning, which is the belief in the doctrinal teachings of Christianity.

The poem begins with the line, "'Faith' is a fine invention". Instead of "Faith" referring to the pure and innocent belief in God, Dickinson suggests that it has become merely an invention, something well thought-out, and that man has created faith and religion for his own benefit. Furthermore, the first two lines ("'Faith' is a fine invention / When Gentlemen can see- ") imply that when things are good and “Gentlemen can see” "'Faith' is a fine invention," a good way of living and thinking. But, the following two lines suggest that when things are rough (“In an Emergency”) “Microscopes are prudent,” also implying that microscopes employed here as a metaphor for scientific advances would be more useful than "faith" at the time of emergency because of the suspension of the unadulterated faith in God itself.

Dickinson uses her poetry as an exploration of “faith”: something well thought-out and institutionized in the forms of creeds and doctrines. In the concluding lines, she gives emphasis to the importance of "seeing": it is better to see with microscopes than to be sightless with “faith.” That is one of the main reasons that she disengaged herself from the religious establishment of her day. As she says, "Some keep the Sabbath going to Church -- / I keep it, staying at Home --".

"Seeing" is a biblical metaphor, too.

Like most of her poems which are short and full of thought provoking twists, this poem is no exception.

In my view, there is a sense of loss ("When Gentlemen can see—") in the speaker's voice on faith and what it has become ( using "Microscopes ... / In an Emergency").

The review is very good. Emily's poems need many re-reads.

With this help, we can understand it more.

In your view, Dickinson appears to criticize what man has made of "Faith," not the "pure and innocent belief in God."

Maybe she implies that the gentlemen only believe what they can see by their reasoning.

Although disengaged from the religious establishment of her day, Emily Dickinson has a deeper, personal knowledge of her God.

I NEVER lost as much but twice by Emily Dickinson

I NEVER lost as much but twice,
And that was in the sod;
Twice have I stood a beggar
Before the door of God!

Angels, twice descending,
Reimbursed my store.
Burglar, banker, father,
I am poor once more!

Yes, well said. The poem must be read in the religious context of her day. She is close to her God at heart.

I know that He exists by Emily Dickinson

I know that He exists.
Somewhere—in Silence—
He has hid his rare life
From our gross eyes.

'Tis an instant's play.
'Tis a fond Ambush—
Just to make Bliss
Earn her own surprise!

But—should the play
Prove piercing earnest—
Should the glee—glaze—
In Death's—stiff—stare—

Would not the fun
Look too expensive!
Would not the jest—
Have crawled too far!
