The Blue Oats


for Elizabeth Arabell Barney (1928 - 1994)


In a room of thinly whitewashed pine
the man in black speaks about release
and life everlasting beyond the grave.
As he holds the book high, he speaks of death
as a portal between two worlds:
one flawed, one perfect. And with clarity
he calls on us to rejoice, to open
our hearts in celebration and praise.

But this careworn congregation of
the tottering aged; who among them
dares view death as triumph? Who believes it?
A sanctuary window stands open;
we watch as a maple welcomes autumn
and sing a hymn said to have been favoured
by the deceased. Hours later,
on the shore of a northern lake,

blue oats clutch the fading sunlight
on the last warm afternoon of the year.
