现有一事请教:我儿子收到 Residential College University of Michigan 的录取信件.你是否了解这个学院?我儿子比较喜欢数学,物理,及商科,你是否能给我们一些建议?
他申请的其他学校还没有消息,估计要等到月底或下月中了.他的SAT成绩不太好.这个学校要求三周内答复,只是一封信,没有其它的表格.

我不熟悉Residential College University of Michigan。 不知是不是University of Michigan–Ann Arbor 的本科部。 University of Michigan–Ann Arbor 是一个很好的学校。在美国的公立大学中排名第三。 其商学院， 工学院都是美国最好的之一。

你好,
我在网上看了一下，感觉这college 象 U of M的一部分，如果想确定。最简单的方法是
１）。送一个e-mail 给University of Michigan, 确认一下。[email protected]
２）。 在 U of M的网上注册后， 可查看你儿子的申请进展情况。 网址是：http://www.admissions.umich.edu/
另外如果还申请了别的学校， 可稍等一下， 看看别的学校录取情况而定。

谢谢!我马上查一下,感觉上是个以文科为主的学校,好象不太适合.
这周末去多大,他们有个OPEN HOUSE,只是儿子一心想去美国,我们实在是为难,他的成绩在加拿大是足够了的,现在已收到滑铁卢数学和商科双学位OFFER.
目前只好等了.

U of M的经济资助如何？一般而言公立学校能提供的资助有限。 U of M是不错的学校。 但要全自费就有点不值得。

是这么回事儿,所以很为难.再等等吧.另外,他本月还要参加加拿大奥林匹克数学公开赛的复赛,去年物理竞赛是安省第六,不知这些对申请是否有帮助?还有就是面试对录取有多大帮助(他已经过MIT等四所大学的面试).

凡是有任何突出的成绩（包括竞赛，或义工等）， 应该及时通知所申请的学校。 这对申请只有好处。

Hi. I live in WWW city. Our whole family has seen the news of your son, Wenxun, going to Harvard! I've seen the profile of Wenxun - doing research, winning awards, involved in school,becoming teen columnist, etc. I'll have to say that he's perhaps the most marvelous student I've ever read about (never met him, unfortunately)! Next year I will be in Grade 12 and I am planning to apply to take the SAT and try my luck for an IVY school in US, though I certainly don't have the equivalence of his resume.
Anyways, I wanted to know if Wenxun was accepted to Harvard by Early Decision. If yes or no, then why did you choose (or not choose) to apply under Early Decision? Your suggestions for others, perhaps?

By the way, I guess wenxun wouldnt be able to accept the CMSF scholarship, as that is only offered for students going to Canadian Universities. And congratulations to him on winning the Dupont Science Essay Contest. It seems like everywhere I go, I see the name Wenxun on the winner's list. (Not joking, it's true)!

Have you taken SAT? I wish you are doing fine for your application. Wenxin
was accepted by early action last year. He is studying in Harvard now.

Hi
Thank you for your response. I had just been deferred from Early Action from Harvard. Having actually applied to Harvard made me realize how hard it is to get admitted, and this is why I truly admire Wenxin for getting accepted early. I was just wondering if you know how likely deferral candidates can get accepted again in April. However, I believe my most practical choice is to concentrate on applying to Canadian Universities, as I am truly not good enough for Ivy League.

Thanks for telling me the story of a girl who got deferred and admitted to Yale last year because that was a real confidence booster for me!
Though we've never met, I think that you are the most knowledgable person that I known areas of Elite American School Admission. So could you comment on the following two schools: Williams College and MIT??Let me know anything you know about these two colleges because I think that your opinions will shed light from a different perspective than that reflected from the college's website.
Really, just comment about anything (e.g. reputation, admission, competitiveness, research, sports, how are the schools different from Ivy Leagues, etc.)?

I do not know very much about Williams College and MIT. The following are
either rumors or overheard from somewhere:
1). Both Williams and MIT are well better than the average of Ivy schools
in reputation;
2). The class size in Williams usually is small. Students may have more
chance to talk with professors than MIT;
3). Studying in MIT is very stressful;
4). MIT's student dorm does not have food service. Students may have to
eat off the campus;
5). MIT is strong in engineering, Williams is strong in liberal arts;
6). Williams locates in a college town, more countryside style; MIT locates
in a typical city environment;

I just got rejected by MIT today, and I am literally heartbroken. So I thought that I will write you an email because last time when Harvard deferred me, your encouragement really made me feel better. (Thanks again for that!) Now all my hopes rest on Williams College, since it has not rejected me yet.
I have a question: in your opinion, is it easier to get into Williams College than MIT? You don't have to provide me with statistics since I have researched on their admission rates already on the Internet.?I just wanted your opinion.?If you don't know, please tell me your best guess.?

| 回信 写到: | Even though statistically Williams is as competative as MIT and as good as
MIT, I guess that Williams College would be easier to get in for a Canadian
student. The reason is that MIT is well-known over the world, but Williams
College is recognized by only top-gun families in US. All colleges want to
entend their geographic realm. I assume much more Canadian students are
applying for MIT but only a few for Williams.
I wish you will win Williams. However, if any unexpected thing happens, I
hope that you can face to a failure with a smile. I was a looser many times
in many criterial steps. For example, I was rejected by high school
admission only because of my dad's political background. I never got a
chance to study in high school even though most of my best friends did. I
was only 14 years old that time. But I continuously taught my self all high
school subjects even though I had to work over 12 hours as a labor for a
builder, then for a farm. Finally I got a chance for college admission
examination when I was 20. I ranked the first place in my hometown, where
over 10,000 high school students competed for that examination. I was
regarded as a hero in my hometown. Twenty-five years later, when I went back
my hometown, a teacher recognized me and said: "I remember you, you were the
guy who did not study even one day in high school, but beat all high school
students in college admission examinations!"
If you unluckily were rejected by Williams, and get in a Canadian
university. I wish one day you will be pround of yourself while you beat
many Ivy students to get in a law school or medical school. The life will
always be full of unluckies. But a person with a great personality will
finally stand up.
Please inform me any progress and success in your future. I will be happy to
see you are standing up.

美国各大学对本科生的资助政策学校与学校差异很大。初略地讲，大学越好资助通常也越多。一流的大学（如常青藤学院）几乎都没有奖学金 （少数学校例外， 如Duke)， 只有助学金。助学金完全是根据家庭收入算出来的。家庭收入越少助学金给得越多。 根据今年的最新信息,举例说家庭收入在六万美元以下的家庭，哈佛将提供全部费用, 包括学费, 生活费, 甚至买衣服的费用, 和每年两次回家的路费. 家庭收入在十万美元左右的家庭，哈佛一般能给每年两万以上的助学金。
差一些的大学有助学金也有奖学金。 他们用奖学金来吸引好学生。举例说如一个孩子如果同时被Yale和Boston University 录取了。 只要他告诉Boston他已经被Yale录取, 但答应去Boston University，一般都能拿到全额奖学金.
公立大学用的是本州纳税人的钱， 给外州学生资助很少，给外国人就更少了。
一流的大学计算助学金时除了收入外， 也要考虑家庭的合理支出。收入包括所有工资收入， 投资收入（包括房产投资）。 对自己住的房，有的学校甚至需要了解你已经付掉了多少。举例说，两家同样住的是现市场价值４０万的房，但一家已经付清， 另一家只付了一半， 在计算助学金也可能有差别。各校的具体算法不会公开。但学生可以试一下用multiple offers去提高资助额。即多申请几个学校。 如果被同等级的几个学校录取， 可以在资助上讨价还价。比如自己想去University of Chicago, 可同时申请Brown, Rice 等等。 如果录取后Brown的资助比University of Chicago好， 可把Brown的信传真给Chicago， 大部分情况下Chicago都会增加资助到Brown的水平。 但你不能指望用低等级的学校的offer和上一等级的学校讨价还价。比如说Yale一般不会因为Chicago录取你了就给你增加资助；
