1) 我出生在一个自由城市，临近北海岸边。

2) 在我出生的那年，钞票被撕成
彩纸片。一个面包值一百万马克，当然
我不记得这些。

3) 父母和祖父母围在我身边。
我居住的世界只有温暖的声音而没有利爪。

4) 一个充满乐趣的宝地把我带进一座带铃声的
房子。一位宽胸脯的老师把我带了进去。

5) 家里的书架连接起天空和大地。

6) 城里的孩子在星期天趟过松果
和报春花的沼泽地，一列小火车驶向远方。

7) 我的祖国被历史给予
比地震和飓风更致命的撞击。

我的父亲忙于躲避恶徒。我的母亲
告诉我隔墙有耳。我明白了秘密的重负。

9) 我进入了青春期，不堪光明的白昼和不堪黑暗的夜晚。

10) 一对父母，两个女儿，我们循着日月
跨越海洋。我的祖父母留在了
身后的黑暗里。

11) 人人都飞快地说着一种新的语言。最终
我还是跟上了他们。

12) 当我遇见了你，新的语言成了爱的语言。

13) 母亲的死使女儿痛得逃进诗歌。
这个女儿又成了女儿们的母亲。

14) 平凡的日子：它的充足与厚度。到处
一团乱麻。过去已逝，未来依然
无法想象，因为有绚烂、艰难、热忱的今天。

15) 一年又一年都是如此。

16) 孩子不再是孩子。一个老人的痛苦，
一个老人的孤独。

17) 然后我的父亲也消逝。

1 我试着再次回家。我站在通向
童年的门口，而它却不开放。

19) 有那么一天，在拥挤的电梯里，每个人的脸
都会比我年轻。

20) 到现在，一切还好。这些光辉的日日夜夜
正气喘吁吁地奔忙着。我们跟上吧，你和我。

1) I was born in a Free City, near the North Sea.

2) In the year of my birth, money was shredded into
confetti. A loaf of bread cost a million marks. Of
course I do not remember this.

3) Parents and grandparents hovered around me. The
world I lived in had a soft voice and no claws.

4) A cornucopia filled with treats took me into a building
with bells. A wide-bosomed teacher took me in.

5) At home the bookshelves connected heaven and earth.

6) On Sundays the city child waded through pinecones
and primrose marshes, a short train ride away.

7) My country was struck by history more deadly than
earthquakes or hurricanes.

8] My father was busy eluding the monsters. My mother
told me the walls had ears. I learned the burden of secrets.

9) I moved into the too bright days, the too dark nights
of adolescence.

10) Two parents, two daughters, we followed the sun
and the moon across the ocean. My grandparents stayed
behind in darkness.

11) In the new language everyone spoke too fast. Eventually
I caught up with them.

12) When I met you, the new language became the language
of love.

13) The death of the mother hurt the daughter into poetry.
The daughter became a mother of daughters.

14) Ordinary life: the plenty and thick of it. Knots tying
threads to everywhere. The past pushed away, the future left
unimagined for the sake of the glorious, difficult, passionate
present.

15) Years and years of this.

16) The children no longer children. An old man's pain, an
old man's loneliness.

17) And then my father too disappeared.

1 I tried to go home again. I stood at the door to my
childhood, but it was closed to the public.

19) One day, on a crowded elevator, everyone's face was younger
than mine.

20) So far, so good. The brilliant days and nights are
breathless in their hurry. We follow, you and I.

有几处的理解似乎有待商榷：

这里的意思是：乘火车的话，路程很短，在离城里不远的地方。可直译，也可意译为：在不远的郊外。与城里的孩子相呼应。

14) The past pushed away, the future left
unimagined for the sake of the glorious, difficult, passionate
present.
这是诗人对“过去、现在与未来”的态度，重点是“着眼于现在”。
"left unimagined" means "leave it alone and do not try to imagine it"。"unimagined"不同于"unimaginable"。
可否这样翻译：送走过去，莫想未来，为了绚烂、艰难与激情的现在。

19) One day, on a crowded elevator, everyone's face was younger
than mine.
那一天，（站）在拥挤的电梯上，（发现）每一个人的脸都比我年轻。
