[小万]

The Pebbles

My hands red from the cold
My eyes lighted
It’s a summer’s day
Winds pushing the lake water up the beach
Slightly touching my bare feet

Running my fingers through the pebbles
That are shying under the clear water
Different colors, different shapes
Quietly lying with one another
Forming a natural mosaic

Children’s laughter, and
Teasing breezes
Gently stirred cloud’s reflections
The pebbles, still close together

Where did they come from?
This ivory one, was it the child of Nero River?
The round one, with the color of Helen’s hair
Is it really from Sparta?
Oh, and the dark green one that resembles my own jade
Is it possible
That it fell loose from the Chinese maiden’s neck?
And……
My imagination went beyond the horizon before me
A puzzle faced girl in the water looked back at me
Then smiled

Wherever they came from
Here, together, in Lake Ontario
They look beautiful
