as I watch

perching on a lonely canoe
a red heron lifts one leg
head towards me

pacing back and forth
on the soft sand
tides up, wiping my footprints

back to my room
from my window

This Year’s Vacation (170)

I almost bought the tickets to Paris this summer,
only a second of hesitation, I lose the chance
of the Last Minute deal. A day later,
an airplane was shot down. Ignoring the news first,
I thought that was some kind prank.
Soon I know I was wrong,
and this whole world didn't feel right.
I left a message to my family:
Don’t plan for any vacation.
Stay home.

Well, to make up, I jogged on the long trail
behind our house.
I saw rabbits, ducks and red robins.
I took photos of them and sent them through iPhone,
at least, they were sure that I was safe.
yet I would stay inside when dark fell,
Amber Alerts worried me even in this quiet suburb.
Any stranger could be a monster.
I couldn’t fall sleep and fear for more nightmares.
so I chose to write poems,
well, at least I could find a safe place in my mind,
well, I could retell vacations once I had.

“The Savior” (222)

My father’s father was a fisherman. My mother’s father was a judge. In olden times nobody would expect one day they would meet each other, never mind got married. Fate brought them together. In fact the transformation of China changed many people’s life courses. The new government seized all valuable things from my mother’s family and sent them to the countryside to reform. Although my grandpa had no education, he worked hard to provide my father with higher education. Soon, my father became the wisest man in his hometown. When he met my mother, he knew she was his future wife. At that time, nobody dared to marry a girl with a bad or dark background as the government defined them. Yet, my father bravely pursued her and eventually married her. And because of this, my father became the savior of my mother’s family. Although they still needed to face the harshness from the government and other groups, at least, they were safe. Later on, the government reformed and everything changed again. My father became the savior for his own family because of his knowledge and wisdom. With his suggestions, each of my uncles opened his own business and made a better life. My father was highly respected by all of us. And, thus we jokingly called him, “The Savior”.
