(Tanka V has been published in American Tanka, Issue 18.

I am overjoyed that this month alone, all of my tanka have been published in the Big Four tanka journals: Ribbons, Modern English Tanka, Gusts, and American Tanka)

Reading and Writing: Life on the Page

Ramblings of a Fatigued Poet: My Life with Calliope (Tanka Sequence)

I

not seeing
we pass each other by --
in the corridors
of my dreams
I see you

II

waking alone
in the middle of a night
distressed --
you evade my glances
even in dreams

III

a garden blossoms
hues fluctuate
as seasons go
so does your heart
to me

IV

my life with you
like riding the merry-go-round --
it goes round and round
up and down
but gets me nowhere

V

a mouth
opening, closing
salivating --
my recollection
of a divorced man

Thanks!

Below is the reply from the moderator for Wild Poetry Forum:

"My favorite was the fifth, Chen-ou. You really got to something most unusual there. I've read about divorce many times, but the mouth opening, closing and salivating were not things I'd seen before. And the image is one with much impact. "

Yes, I concur! I love and disgust this imagery of a man who salivates when talking/ complaining.

May I ask who he is?

It’s one of my aesthetic goals.

He is the man who sat next to me on the TTC subway about one year ago and who couldn't help bitching about his recently divorced wife.

Below are the replies from my fellow poets at another forum:

the emotions are very clear yet subtle, the last one is very painful.

--Sergio Ortiz

I agree with Sergio, excellent I identify with all of them but the last one more so,

-- Rodney L. Eisenbrandt

I keep reading each of your kyoka, and still haven't been able to point out one as my favourite. As with most of your sequences, they go so well together. Fabulously well, I'd say.
The often very stunning and unique images you use in your Calliope poems, really make your readers sit up and pay attention.

The following is the reply from my poet friend, Viv:

I loved this Senryu based Tanka / Waka Quintet Chen-ou.

you evade my glances
even in dreams

Dreams are opposites as you well know.

Lovely Japanese imagery: blossoms, seasons.

Well written.

Thanks for your discerning eye for my tanka.

Transience is a recurring theme in Japanese tanka.

How invisibly
it changes color
in this world,
the flower
of the human heart.
