Calligraphy of Geese (renamed here as Being Human) has been listed in the WPF Hall of Fame Honorable Mention. Wild Poetry Forum is named as one of the "101 Best Websites for Writers" by Writer's Digest. Calligraphy of Geese has been enthusiastically received since I posted it ten days ago, and it, along with my other two poems, was recommended by a poetry editor for publication in Kyoto Journal, which is one of the most influential Asian American Journals. Now, I am looking forward to hearing good news.

Notes:
1 Being Human is a tribute poem to Ezra Pound, whose genius is the discovery of the living matter, the artistic force, of Chinese poetry. In his 1913 poem entitled In a Station of the Metro, Pound employed his newly conceived poetics of the sign, which he called “ideogrammic” that prefers merely putting things side by side without comment or explicit conjunction. Following Ernest Fenollosa's view of the Chinese written language system and classical Chinese poetry, one which is well expressed in the then-famous essay entitled The Chinese Written Character as a medium for Poetry, Pound based his ideogrammic poetics on the false assumption that Chinese characters are essentially ideographic and non-phonetic in nature and that the sense of individual characters is visually generated by the juxtaposition of their graphic components. Two years later after writing the most famous imagistic poem, he published the first book-length collection of poems entitled Cathay, which marked, in T. S. Eliot’s words, “the invention of Chinese poetry in our time.”
2 The shape of the flight pattern of geese is similar to one of the simplest, yet most important Chinese word, human (人), which pictographically and literally means that man stands on his two feet. Scientists discover that geese fly in a V-shape formation to conserve energy. The lead goose splits the air current to make it easier for the rest to move efficiently through the air. When the lead goose gets tired, it peels off the point position and rotates back into the V-formation. The next one in line then steps up and takes its turn. This formation also allows geese to keep an eye on each other and communicate landing locations. When a goose gets sick or wounded and has to go down to land. Two other geese go with it to support and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or gets better to return to the formation.
Geese's cooperative formation flying ideogrammatically conveys the connotative meaning of the Chinese word, human. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

A thought-provoking, visually appealing shape poem.
Put the shape of the poem aside, it can be read as a haiku, which has a run-on title. |

In my view, strictly speaking, Being Human is a visual poem, in which the visual arrangement of text is important in conveying the intended effect of the work. _________________ 報三恩、耕三大福田 |

This shape poem, denotatively and connotatively, conveys the true meaning of "being human." Moreover, visually speaking, the focus of the poem is geese. _________________ My throat knew thirst before the structure

Below are the replies from my fellow poets at another forum:
Brilliant! Reading this poem is an education, Chen. Learned much about Ezra Pound and the V formation of geese. thanks for the nice read.
-- Arunansu Banerjee
Chen-ou~ Ah, a portable symphony, a wee universe!
Delightful at any level of pondering.
-- Dale McLain
Very beautifully done, Chen-ou. The word calligraphy sets this apart and couldn't have been any more appropriate or well selected. Thank you.
~M~
Your skein of geese is a wonderful poem.
Bird-calligraphy . . . I love the idea, and what you have done with it.
Your explanation, too, is absolutely fascinating.

I like this idea, too. And your poem reminds me of the collection of concrete poetry by a French poet (sorry, I forgot his name) _________________ This dark

Below is an exceprt from my friend, Emusing, who is a poet and poetry editor:
There is a vulnerability to the shape of the poem ... The left side especially has much more of an elegant line depicting the tenuous flight of birds. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Yes, I concur!
Besides contructing a scene with the semantic meanings of the words themselves, this poem evokes the visual scene typographically and emotionally. _________________ East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet. |
