In the realm of middle class American suburban life, happiness and social achievement are closely intertwined. A dream home portrayed in pop culture and thus imagined by the Americans is located in an affluent location with its well watered front lawn and massifs of full-fledged roses framed by a white-picked fence, which is a recurring theme in David Lynch’s movies.

What follows is an excerpt from Taste of Suburbia Arrives in the South Bronx by Philip Shenon:

''I want white,'' Mr. Logue said. ''I don't know,'' the architect said. ''A white fence would seem to be a good target for graffiti artists.'' ''I want white,'' Mr Logue said. ''A white picket fence. It has that suburban flavor.'' ''What about the graffiti?'' the architect asked. ''I'm not worried,'' Mr. Logue said. ''What is the American dream? A home of your own with a white picket fence. I want white.''

Do you see that? the South Bronx.

By the way, I've posted the rest of my submitted tanka.

Below are the replies from my poet friends at another forum:

Chen I read these poems early this morning, very early. I felt like I was transported to my childhood. I was rediscovering myself. Few poems have this effect on me. E[musing] is right, there is a lot of wisdom in these poems, a lot of wisdom.

-- Sergio Ortiz

Ukiyo,
there you are
one multicolered leaf
alone on the dream stream
or pehaps not?

....

a downy feather
falling from some unknown where
feels the wind pass
around and through it
but touches none of it?
Untrue.

.....

Smoke caught in the breezes
becomes thin/invisible.
Who can call it back
unburn it
chill the fire
and remake the leaves
then green them again?
No one can.

,,,,,

Your last breath
warm, alive and wet
at the exhaling.
Is this something you can catch?
Something to hold?
No, cricket sounds on snowflakes!

.....

Words?
Restrictions.
Syllables?
Just impatience.
Come along now,
Let us spread moonlight on our bread.

......

and so it goes.

-- Addotto

Hi! Ericcoliu:

Glad to get the opportunity to read the rest of your submitted tanka, which are still seeking "the shelter of the alphabet":

I like IV. Is III a rewrite of your previously published poem?

By the way, to what does Ukiyo refer in the reply from your friend, Addotto?

Yes, it's my rewrite of The L Word? in the form of tanka.

The floating world is the English translation of the Japanese term Ukiyo, which describes the urban life style, especially the pleasure-seeking aspects, of Edo Period Japan (1600–1867).

Below is an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry entitled Ukiyo:

“This view of the Floating World is centered on Yoshiwara, the licensed red-light district of Edo (modern Tokyo). The area's brothels, teahouses and kabuki theaters were frequented by Japan's growing middle class. This particular Floating World culture also arose in other cities such as Osaka and Kyoto.

It is also an ironic allusion to the homophone "Sorrowful World" (憂き世), the earthly plane of death and rebirth from which Buddhists sought release.”

Below is my reply to Addotto's poem:

Addotto 写到:

Ukiyo,
there you are
one multicolered leaf
alone on the dream stream
or pehaps not?

You are one
of the countless fallen maple leaves
as red as a bloodstain.
You are the sorrow
sealed in the heart of an outsider
wandering along the sidewalk
and blaming the autumn wind.

Addotto, thank you so much for your poetic replies. They are delightful as well as thought provoking. I particularly like the first one, especially the idea about “ukiyo.” Generally speaking, I employ Masaoka Shiki’s shasei technique to approach my view of ukiyo.

IV

distressed
in the wake of a dream --
I hear
time passing
in the sound of snow

V

buried earth
a silver carpet --
maples and I
gaze at the barrenness
we see in each other

The lines marked above are my favorite ones.

Here is my "sketches of this chilling winter:"

Thoughts on a wintry morning

I

Snowflakes
falling from the sky
from time to time
seem to dance
out of my sight

II

Bush fled
before the onslaught of winter
Obama must shovel
the sidewalks
of Wall Street

I like the teasing, merry tone of I and appreciate the biting commentary expressed in II.
