Reading and Writing: Life on the Page

Cut My Life into Pieces (Contemporary English Haibun)

For me, writing is like a surgical process, cutting the story down to its barest essentials. The pen is a scalpel. There is a beating heart left there, bleeding on the page. Writing also functions as a container. I can keep pouring out all of my pain into that vessel. It doesn’t tell me to get over my pain and then move on with my life. Rather it smiles at me and says, “Give me more of your pain.”

my anguish
spilled on a blank page
the poem

Below are replies from my poet friends:

Beautifully expressed,Eric.
There is a Jewish expression that relates to a Jewish view of God .I think it is 'tikkun olam ' but I did not check to see if that is accurate. This view of God is that he left the world incomplete and that it is our task to complete or perfect it.I see you are a person who participates in that task.

-- Mary

Your scalpel has cut life down to the base pain.

My first thought after reading.

I eat
the bread-
life grinds

-- Rodney L. Eisenbrandt

Well done ku...

without a pen
words dirty
an empty space

-- Gary Blankenship

It sounds like writing as a way of healing.

Spilled or Inscribed?

Yes.

“I often think life writing is an outcry of pain in textual forms. For the time being, it is a way of sorting out my tangled feelings, expressing my wounded self, and thus, hopefully, healing. To write about the difficulties I've encountered since my emigration to Canada is to revisit tormenting experiences and journey back to the darkest tunnels of memory. Not only are courage and determination needed but also faith -- faith that the need for this literary exploration will pass and illumination will come at last. Until then, I keep writing in the hope that I can come to terms with my past and present. Yet I must admit that I also keep writing in the vain hope that I will be read. The two are inextricably linked.”

For further information concerning this topic, please read my piece entitled Life Writing, Writing Life: The Journey to Healing.

By the way, I think "spilled" is better in the context of my poem.

Thanks for your close reading and comments.

Cutting the story down to its barest essentials is good advice to any writer of prose or verse. I like your cutting metaphor.

In Marshall Gentry and William L. Stull’s Conversations with Raymond Carver, Carver, famous for his minimalist writing, credits his editor Gordon Lish with instilling in him “that if you could say it in five words instead of fifteen, use five words.”

Yes. This is one of writing rules I try to live by: saying more with less.
