Reading and Writing: Life on the Page

Love, S e x, and Supper

Puppy love –
an instant of crushing fever
touched by Bambi-eyed infatuation

Middle-aged s e x –
five minutes of sweet flavor
followed by bland repetition

Golden companion –
a lifetime of eating together
waiting for Heavenly Banquet

Great lines. Middle-aged s e x tastes like chewing gum -- ericcoliu's motto.

I like that a burst of flavor and it’s gone.

I think my poem is more than that.

Below is the reply from my poet friend, Rodney L. Eisenbrandt, at Wild Poetry Forum:

Puppy love to golden companion.
Middle age . was good and it still is today. Lol
Excellent a whole life in nine sentences, got to love it.

Fatally innocent attraction or addiction?

Oddly enough, your poem reminds me of Eat, Drink, Man, and Woman by Ang Lee.

Thanks for the read and sharing your thought.

I’ve got nothing against "puppy love," and just been fascinated by this fatally innocent attraction.

young men's love then lies
Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes

-- Friar Laurence, Romeo and Juliet Act II

Listen to Paul Anka' s Puppy Love.

Hmm. Interesting. I'll check out its DVD version and come back later to reply your post.

I enjoyed the read and loved the title intensely and the way the poem proceeded from anticipation ("puppy love) to resignation ("eating together") at the end.

An interesting interpretation.

Personally, I don't view "a lifetime of eating together" is symptomatic of some kind of resignation. Interpreted within the Chinese cultural tradition, it's a motif of domestic happiness.

To the best of my knowledge, Li-Young Lee is one of the most prominent poets of whose poetry the recurring motif is eating. Many of his poems are filled with themes of simplicity, strength, and silence, and they convey a strong sense of completeness interwoven with aloneness, fantasy, meditation, and Chinese food.

Below are two of his poems dealing with "eating" from differing perspectives:

Eating Together

In the steamer is the trout
seasoned with slivers of ginger,
two sprigs of green onion, and sesame oil.
We shall eat it with rice for lunch,
brothers, sister, my mother who will
taste the sweetest meat of the head,
holding it between her fingers
deftly, the way my father did
weeks ago. Then he lay down
to sleep like a snow-covered road
winding through pines older than him,
without any travelers, and lonely for no one.

Eating Alone

I've pulled the last of the year's young onions.
The garden is bare now. The ground is cold,
brown and old. What is left of the day flames
in the maples at the corner of my
eye. I turn, a cardinal vanishes.
By the cellar door, I wash the onions,
then drink from the icy metal spigot.

Once, years back, I walked beside my father
among the windfall pears. I can't recall
our words. We may have strolled in silence. But
I still see him bend that way-left hand braced
on knee, creaky-to lift and hold to my
eye a rotten pear. In it, a hornet
spun crazily, glazed in slow, glistening juice.

It was my father I saw this morning
waving to me from the trees. I almost
called to him, until I came close enough
to see the shovel, leaning where I had
left it, in the flickering, deep green shade.

White rice steaming, almost done. Sweet green peas
fried in onions. Shrimp braised in sesame
oil and garlic. And my own loneliness.
What more could I, a young man, want.
