Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Nothing Gold Can Stay first appeared in his 1923 volume, New Hampshire, his first book to win a Pulitzer Prize. Some Frost scholars claim that the poem helped Frost to win a Pulitzer Prize. Nothing Gold Can Stay is remarkably brief. Only eight lines long, it consists of just forty words. The diction is extremely simple. No word is longer than two syllables. Most are monosyllabic. This poem is still considered one of Robert Frost's best, also featured in the book and movie, The Outsiders, which was written by S.E. Hinton.
