China relief workers buried in mudflow

"PETER CAVE: Very little at this stage, just a couple of lines on the official Chinese news agency, Xinhua. They say that 200 relief workers in the south west of China have been buried by mud flows over the past two days. They're quoting transport ministry officials on that.

That's all there has been. But there have been a series of quite large aftershocks over the past few days. There was one yesterday of 6.1; one earlier today, 5.4.

And given the fact that there is torrential rain in the area and that a lot of rivers have been blocked by landslides, the whole area is ripe for mudslides.

So, if this has happened, it has been no surprise whatsoever because the ground is very unstable. As I said, continuing aftershocks and very heavy rain in the area."

The rain fell throughout the night with the roof already leaking -- an added misfortune.
