Compassionate Couch Potato
Turn on the TV. The mind turns out, and the body relaxes. Eight people are dead in exchange of Middle East fire, all-star centre Yao Ming is out for the season with foot stress fracture, homeless people sleep on the street, Honda plans to end U.S. motorcycle production, and starving Africans flash before your eyes. You want to leap through the TV into their world, to put your hands out and ease their pains. You only want to help, but you miss the number -- 1-800-9 something. You sigh, and sit back. Eventually, you sit through all of night programs.

The world is not outside; it’s here. On the TV screen, eight people dead in exchange of Middle East fire, Yao Ming out for the season with foot stress fracture, homeless people sleeping on the street, and Chocolate Jesus display shut down, flash before your eyes like the vision of your soul. The world is here and now; it's inside this endless spectacle of formulaic teasers. You can sit here and watch them time and again, and the people on the screen all speak English

Compassionate couch potato? A oxymoronic phrase just like Bush's conception of Compassionate Conservative in a rapidly-changing society.

Yes, well said.
In the era of amusing ourselves to death, public discourse on important issues has disappeared and turned into infotainment.
How can you expect couch potatoes to do something about changing "the world on the TV screen."

Televised suffering can be the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering.
In a televised and thus globalized era, television is the sigh of the couch potato, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of all couch potatoes.
