What is art and what does it bring to you?

What is Art? Before our seminar begins, I want to ask you a question? What is Art?

It is a simple question, but hard to answer.

Why? Because every one has his own definition of art.

In the dictionary, Art is defined as:

An application of human creativity that has some form of appreciative value, usually on the basis of aesthetic value or emotional impact. Much about art is controversial, including what specific cases can be considered such.

So even in a dictionary, it is defined Art is controversial.

Today we are not going to debate how to define art, but to understand art and try to build the bridge towards art and our life.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Here I will provide three paintings. (one kind of form of art, oil painting) For each painting, I will ask you to take a close look and try to feel it; try to pull your personal understanding or relationship from it. Then I will go through my own experience and feelings about these arts as a demonstration.

The first painting: A windy afternoon (Paint By William Marr)
Please take a look. How do you feel? Do you feel anything? What is inside?
Do you feel its emotional impact? Good. Right. That is art. You feel it now.

Now let me read what I feel about it: …..(read PowerPoint screen which display the poem A windy afternoon)

Standing here
Listen to the piercing winds.

Once,wings of
flying hearts,
Now, shattered
And fallen.

Gasping for our last breath,
Where could we find
our final peace?

The second painting: Captains Quarters (Paint By Barry McCarthy)
Now this is a kind of puzzle, hard to feel but you are assure something mysterious there…
You may wonder if it is a real scene. Why the artist highlight the window and the bell, one is modern, one is ancient? Great!
Now it brings us to think, not only to feel…
When I talked with McCarthy about this painting, I asked the same question now you are wondering. He told me it was not the real scene. The real one only had a window, but he wanted to add some mystery inside to reveal some kind of waiting and hope…

For me, without knowing the artist’s thoughts, I interpreted the painting as two poems: (Blue) & (Captains Quarters)

Blue

The ancient well
hides its depth,
under rotten rims.

Stylish window displays,
shut
beyond this muted scene.

Nobody fetches water
from the well.
Inside or outside,
are only shadows.

Captains Quarters

The ancient bell
hides its stories,
under rotten rims.

Stylish window displays,
shut
beyond this muted scene.

Nobody recalls
its victory.
Inside or outside,
are only shadows.

You see, it is ok to interpret the art by your own thoughts and insight.

The third painting is: Reading on the beach.
This is very ordinary picture, you may say. When I see it, I feel the same. It is very hard for me to appreciate the value or the beauty there.
Any one wants to contribute his view? Let us see how different people can relate to art and pull different meanings or views?

Any one wants to provide us how you view this painting?

Discussion continues.

In the end, let me conclude today’s seminar. What is art? How to relate it?

Ladies and Gentlemen: It is up to you! It is you to appreciate what else you relate to. Art is inside you and what you need to do is to listen to your heart and pull it out.

Thanks!

There are many arts appreciation classes in North America.

As a poet or poetess, it isworth while to familiarise with all art movements from Greek to Roman... Impressionism etc till modern arts.

These art movements which ussually started with painting, had influenced many other art forms; Some of them do cross-over to
poetry.

By looking at some of the leading representatives of these master pieces, many poets and poetess actually score breakthrough in their writing style.

All the best with your seminar, Anna Smile)
